AMERICAN ROACHES
American roaches are the largest of the house-infesting roaches and are considered to be a major pest in the United States. Despite the name, American cockroaches aren’t native to North America. They’re reddish-brown in color with a circular or figure-eight pattern on the thorax as well as a light-colored band around the pronotum.
ARMY WORMS
There are many species of army worms, and each one has its own taste for a specific plant or vegetable. Most of their activity occurs at night, while they hide in plants and under garden debris during the day.
BLACK CRAZY ANTS
Black crazy ants get their name because of their quick and erratic movements that seem to occur at random. The workers are small (approximately 2.3-3 mm) and are dark brown or blackish in color, except for the body (which has a bluish iridescence that’s very faint).
CARPENTER ANTS
Carpenter ants are among the largest of all the species of ants in the United States, with lengths ranging from 3.4 to 13 mm. They’re commonly black in color, but some of them can be reddish or yellowish. The color of carpenter ants can vary among the different species — from jet black to light brown and many other colors in between.
FIRE ANTS
Fire ants get their name from their painful bites and stings. These dark reddish-brown ants are extremely invasive, and they can be found throughout the southern part of the United States. Once they start attacking, fire ants will use their mandibles to grip their prey and inject their venom with a stinger.
FLEAS
Fleas are parasites that feed on humans and other warm-blooded animals. They prefer non-humans, but they will feed on humans if there’s a heavy infestation or when no other hosts are available. Fleas need an environment with warm and humid conditions to develop. They can jump 7-8 inches in a vertical direction and 14-16 inches in a horizontal direction.
GHOST ANTS
Ghost ants look like tiny, white apparitions that suddenly appear then seem to vanish just as quickly, and you can find them both indoors and outdoors. You’ll typically find them in kitchens and bathrooms, because ghost ants in your house will look for areas that have plenty of moisture.
HONEY BEES
Honey bees are typically orangish brown or black in color, with adult workers being anywhere from 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch in length. They will have an enlarged area in the rear of their abdomen, which is broadly banded with orange and brown or brown and black.
RODENTS
Rodents are warm-blooded animals that can be found all over the world. They have large front teeth that they can use for gnawing and check teeth that can be used for chewing. They can chew on whatever is available to them, so they can cause a great deal of damage both in and around your home.
SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES
You can find subterranean termites in both the interior and exterior of your home, and there are several signs that you have an infestation. One of them is the presence of mud tubes along your home’s exterior, which look like tunnels made of wood and soil. They use them to keep themselves from drying out when they move from one place to another.
TEXAS LEAF CUTTER ANTS
A leaf cutter ants colony can have a dozen or more workers that range from 1/8 to 5/8 of an inch length, and they’re often reddish-brown in color. Leaf cutter ants in Texas are often found in the South-Central part of the state (from San Antonio to Dallas), but you can sometimes find them though East Texas and into Louisiana.
TICKS
Ticks will wait for host animals from the tips of grasses and shrubs (not from trees). Once they have been brushed by a moving animal or person, they will let go of the vegetation and climb onto the host.
TUSSOCK CATERPILLARS
If you judge them based on their looks, these furry caterpillars may look harmless. But if you touch one with a bare finger, you’ll feel like you have been pricked by fiberglass. Some species (such as the Brown-tail) will even leave you with a persistent and painful rash. When they’re fully mature, tussock moths are often dull brown or white.
